History
In the late 1980s, Big Boss established Outer Heaven, a formidable fortress nation located in the South African veld. Despite keeping his true identity hidden from the stronghold's civilian population, Big Boss was widely known among them as both a respected hero and a madman. Although aware of the Outer Heaven Resistance, Big Boss chose not to disclose the extent of his knowledge about their activities.
Outer Heaven, under Big Boss's leadership, kidnapped and coerced Dr. Pettrovich, a Russian weapons scientist, to construct the revolutionary nuclear weapon, TX-55 Metal Gear.
In response to rumors suggesting Outer Heaven possessed nuclear capabilities, the Western powers assigned FOXHOUND the critical mission of infiltrating the fortress nation. Gray Fox, a highly skilled operative, successfully infiltrated the stronghold and gathered vital intelligence that he then relayed to the special forces group. Unfortunately, Fox was captured and held as a prisoner.
With FOXHOUND's top operative incapacitated, the group selected Solid Snake, a rookie soldier, for Operation Intrude N313, which aimed to rescue Gray Fox and continue his mission. Unbeknownst to both FOXHOUND and Outer Heaven, Big Boss orchestrated the entire operation, effectively manipulating both sides of the conflict.
Despite his leadership position in Outer Heaven, Big Boss did not actively support the faction during Operation Intrude N313. Instead, he passively worked to undermine Snake and the Resistance. While Snake embarked on the mission, Big Boss, with deceptive intentions, guided him to establish an alliance with the Resistance, secretly monitoring the group's activities. Throughout the mission, Big Boss maintained radio communication with Snake, even resorting to changing frequencies to avoid detection by Outer Heaven's guards. As Snake advanced toward the final facility housing Metal Gear, Big Boss's growing unease became evident, leading him to repeatedly urge Snake to abandon the mission.
Around this time, Schneider, the leader of the Resistance, discovered Big Boss's dual identity. However, before Schneider could disclose this information to Snake, he was assassinated. Another Resistance member, held captive in the depths of Outer Heaven, also possessed knowledge of Big Boss's true identity.
Following Snake's successful destruction of Metal Gear, he confronted Big Boss in a climactic showdown. Before their final confrontation, Big Boss initiated the fortress's self-destruct sequence and revealed to Snake that his true intention had been for FOXHOUND to unintentionally gather misleading information to feed back to the Western powers. However, Snake inadvertently excelled in his false mission, slaughtering his forces and destroying the ultimate weapon, totally unraveling Big Boss's elaborate plans.
In the final battle, Big Boss was defeated, and Snake managed to escape from the facility just before it was engulfed in a massive explosion. However, Big Boss survived the blast and vowed to one day seek revenge against Snake...
Trivia
--Big Boss, at the end of Metal Gear (1987)
- As a result of plot developments in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, there is a commonly-circulated misconception that Big Boss died in Outer Heaven, and that said game's plot twist serves to correct Big Boss's "unexplained" survival and appearance in future installments. However, Big Boss did survive the events in Outer Heaven; he vowed revenge against Solid Snake during the franchise's first post-credits scene.
