History
Ellen Petrovich is the daughter of Dr. Petrovich, a Slavic weapons scientist. She was once the star of the Bolshoi Ballet.
Ellen was kidnapped by the fortress nation, Outer Heaven, in order to coerce her father to develop weapons for the country, chiefly TX-55 Metal Gear. Her prison cell was located in the basement of Outer Heaven Building 1.
During Operation Intrude N313, Solid Snake made contact with Dr. Petrovich, but the scientist refused to help him unless his daughter was rescued.
Thus, Snake set out to find the captive woman. Snake eventually found her cell and rescued her. She confirmed to Snake that her father was forced to create Metal Gear, and asked him to help her father.
It's unknown if she survived Outer Heaven's self-destruct sequence.
Gameplay
Locating Ellen
- There is more than one route to access Ellen's cell:
- The first is to return to Outer Heaven Building 1's basement, and enter the room housing Gray Fox & Solid Snake's cell. Using Card 6 on the locked door leads to Ellen's cell, also locked with the same key.
- The second is to navigate to the southwest end of the maze in Outer Heaven Building 2's basement. The wall can be destroyed with Plastic Explosives, and leads to a door locked with Card 6. The door leads to a dark tunnel connecting Building 1 and Building 2's basement, which can be navigated with the Flashlight. The door at the end of the tunnel, locked with Card 1, leads to the aforementioned room with Ellen's cell.
Interacting with Ellen
As with all prisoners, rescuing Ellen will contribute to the player's Class, while killing her will reduce it. Despite being an important character, it's still possible to kill her and complete the game (at the cost of a reduced Class).
As long as the following conditions have been met, Ellen can be killed:
- The Rocket Launcher has been collected.
- The Compass has been collected.
- The player already knows how to defeat TX-55 Metal Gear.
Behind the scenes
Her name is spelled as "Elen Pettrovich" in Metal Gear's original manual. As with the rest of the illustrations in that document, it's suspected that Ellen's portrait was drawn by the same artist responsible for Nemesis 2's manual.
Trivia
- Ellen's surname "Petrovich" is of Eastern Slavic origin, indicating that she is likely Russian, Ukrainian, or Belarusian.
- Although she only appears in Metal Gear, she is later mentioned in the sequels Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.
