History

Gray Fox joined FOXHOUND sometime during the late 20th century. Eventually, he attained the unit's highest honor: the codename "FOX"; By this time, he was seen as a leader by his comrades.

In the year 19XX, the Western Bloc heard rumors of an ultimate weapon being developed in Outer Heaven. They assigned FOXHOUND to investigate the threat, which resulted in Gray Fox's solo mission to infiltrate Outer Heaven and collect data about the mysterious weapon.

Fox successfully infiltrated the fortress nation over the course of several days, and even created a map of its Building 1, which he promptly sent to FOXHOUND. Soon thereafter, he learned the truth about the ultimate weapon, TX-55 Metal Gear, and that its creator, Dr. Pettrovich, knew how to destroy it. However, as he was transmitting this information, he was captured and imprisoned, only able to utter a single phrase: "Metal Gear...". Fox was detained in a secret prison cell located in the basement of Building X and guarded by Shotgunner.

After Fox's failure, an emergency mission, Operation Intrude N313, was devised. This time, rookie operative Solid Snake was ordered to rescue Fox, continue searching for evidence of Metal Gear, and should it exist: destroy it. However, soon Snake was captured too, and was thrown in the cell adjacent to Fox's. Fortunately, Snake discovered that the wall between their cells was brittle, and was able to break through it. Finally rescued, Fox informed the rookie of Metal Gear's nuclear capabilities, as well of the general location of Dr. Pettrovich. Newly-armed with this intel, Snake left Fox's cell to continue his mission.

It's unknown if Fox survived Outer Heaven's self-destruct sequence.

Gameplay

Interacting with Fox

As with all prisoners, rescuing Fox will contribute to the player's Class, while killing him will reduce it. Despite being an important character, it's still possible to kill him and complete the game (at the cost of a reduced Class).

As long as the following conditions have been met, Fox can be killed:

Behind the scenes

As with the rest of the illustrations in Metal Gear's original manual, it's suspected that Fox's portrait was drawn by the same artist responsible for Nemesis 2's manual.
