1. This is a one player game. The keyboard and a joystick are usable.
2. Insert the rom cartridge into a PC slot, turn on the power and you are ready. For the method of connection between the PC and the TV, see the manual of the PC you are using.
3. To start the game, push SPACE or a shot button when the title screen is displayed.
4. Number of the player stock is set to one. The player life decreases every time he collides a bullet or an enemy. The game is over when the player life reaches zero
5. The mission of the player is to reveal identity of and to destroy METAL GEAR, the ultimate weapon in the enemy fortress. Collect the information/weapon/equipment to accomplish this goal, and proceed following the game scenario.
6. The guard soldiers and various alert networks are located inside the fortress. The player should avoid being spotted by an enemy during his advancement. When a guard soldier or the alert network finds you, the Find mode ensues, and the enemy attacks begin.
7. Following two types of enemy Find modes exist.

   1)	The enemies within the screen being displayed attack. (When [!] is displayed when a guard soldier spots you)
   2)	The backup arrive from out of the screen and attack. (When [!!] is displayed when a guard soldier spots you, or when a camera or sensor noticed you)

   
   
8. After being found by an enemy, the Infiltration mode is restored if you defeat a certain number of weapons.
9. The weapons and equipment are possessed by enemies, or are in the trucks and arsenals. Find and obtain them. Also, guard soldiers may release an item if you defeat them.
10. To open a door that leads to a room, you need a card relevant to the door.
11. Use the elevators to move between the floors in a building.
12. Save a prisoner and you can hear an information.
13. Your rank (class) is promoted every time you rescue a certain number of prisoners. When your rank is promoted, the maximum life increases, and furthermore the maximum numbers for the weapons and equipment that the quantity restriction applies increase. On the other hand, your rank is demoted if you kill a prisoner.
14. The transceiver gives you various information. Particularly, BIG BOSS instructs you from the beginning to the end about various things like how to use the weapons and equipment.
